In 2026, Sweden is introducing new requirements for Swedish citizenship. Here we summarise the most important information you need to know for the year the test comes into effect.

According to Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency), the new rules will apply from 6 June 2026. According to UHR (the Swedish Council for Higher Education), the first test opportunity is planned for 15 August 2026 in Stockholm.
What is changing?
According to Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency), new rules for Swedish citizenship will apply from 6 June 2026. Part of the requirement is to demonstrate knowledge of Swedish society – often in the form of a citizenship test administered by UHR (the Swedish Council for Higher Education).
In addition to knowledge of society, requirements for Swedish language proficiency will also be introduced. You can find details at Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency).
