What is the Swedish citizenship test?

The Swedish citizenship test is a knowledge test about Swedish society. It is developed and managed by UHR (Universitets- och högskolerådet – the Swedish Council for Higher Education) on behalf of the government.

According to UHR, the citizenship test is a multiple-choice test with approximately 60 questions to be answered in 90 minutes. Each question has four answer options with one correct answer. The test is taken in Swedish and on paper. The first test occasion is scheduled for August 15, 2026, in Stockholm.

Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency) processes your citizenship application and directs you to the test via an assignment letter.

Who needs to take the test?

According to the new rules, most adults applying for Swedish citizenship must demonstrate knowledge of Swedish society. There are some exceptions, for example, for individuals who have completed sfi (Swedish for Immigrants) course D or similar training. The details are decided by Migrationsverket.

Test format – how the UHR citizenship test is built

According to UHR, the citizenship test is taken on paper in a test venue with ID checks. It has about 60 multiple-choice questions and you get 90 minutes. The questions are in Swedish and each question has one correct answer among several options.

Questions come from the 13 knowledge areas in UHR's study material Sverige i fokus: democracy and government, laws and rights, the labour market, education, health care, housing, the economy, gender equality, children and family, traditions and holidays, and more.

You receive your result after marking, and the Swedish Migration Agency uses it when assessing your citizenship application. If you fail, you can register for a new test date.
