Mistakes 1–3: During preparation

Mistake 1: Starting to study too late. Two weeks is rarely enough to cover all 13 knowledge areas. Aim for at least 4–8 weeks of preparation.

How the Swedish Citizenship Test works in practice

The citizenship test (medborgarskapsprovet) is a national knowledge test about Swedish society, developed by the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) on behalf of the government. The test is part of the new regulations for Swedish citizenship that will come into effect on June 6, 2026. The first test date is scheduled for August 15, 2026, in Stockholm, with more locations to be opened gradually.

According to UHR, the test consists of approximately 60 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 90 minutes. Each question has four answer options, with exactly one correct answer. The test is taken in Swedish, on paper, in a supervised room. You are not allowed to bring a mobile phone, dictionary, or notes. There are no negative marks, so it's always worth answering all questions even if you are unsure.

Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency) is the authority that processes your citizenship application. Once your application is complete, you will receive an assignment letter stating when and where you are to take the test. You cannot freely choose the time or location yourself – the assignment comes from Migrationsverket in collaboration with UHR's test system.

After the test, you will be notified whether you have passed or not. If you fail, the proposal states that you can retake the test at the next regular opportunity. A failed test does not mean your citizenship application is immediately rejected – Migrationsverket always makes an overall assessment, which also considers residency requirements, good conduct, and financial self-sufficiency requirements.

Mistake 4: Relying on outdated or unreliable practice material from unclear sources. Always use material based on UHR's "Sverige i fokus" (Sweden in Focus).

Mistake 5: Never taking a complete practice test under timed conditions. Without timed practice, 60 questions in 90 minutes will feel shocking on exam day.

Mistake 6: Skipping explanations and only looking at the answer key. Without an explanation, you learn the answer – not the principle. The next time the question is phrased slightly differently, you'll miss the point.

The test content is based on UHR's official educational material "Sverige i fokus" (Sweden in Focus). The material is open, free of charge, and divided into 13 clear knowledge areas. Mistakes 9–10: During the test itself
