How to install the app on iPhone

Open Safari on your iPhone and go to medborgarprovet.com. Tap the Share icon (the square with the arrow). Scroll down and select “Add to Home Screen”. Confirm the name and tap “Add”.

Medborgarprovet will now appear as an icon on your home screen. When you tap it, it will open in full screen without the browser's address bar – just like a real app.

All your results are automatically saved as long as you are logged in. No extra download is needed, and no updates from the App Store.

How the citizenship test works in practice

The citizenship test (medborgarskapsprovet) is a national knowledge test about Swedish society, developed by the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) on behalf of the government. The test is part of the new regulations for Swedish citizenship that will come into force on June 6, 2026. The first test occasion is planned for August 15, 2026, in Stockholm, with more locations to open gradually.

According to UHR, the test consists of approximately 60 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 90 minutes. Each question has four answer options, where exactly one is correct. The test is written in Swedish and on paper in a supervised venue. You are not allowed to bring a mobile phone, dictionary, or notes. There are no negative marks, so it always pays to answer all questions even if you are unsure.

Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency) is the authority that assesses your citizenship application. When your application is complete, you will receive an instruction letter stating when and where you are to take the test. You cannot freely choose the time or location yourself – the instructions come from Migrationsverket in collaboration with UHR's test system.

After the test, you will receive notice of whether you have passed or not. If you fail, according to the proposal, you can retake the test at the next regular opportunity. A failed test does not mean your citizenship application is immediately rejected – Migrationsverket always makes an overall assessment, which also considers residency requirements, a respectable way of life, and maintenance requirements.

How to install the app on Android

Open Chrome (or Samsung Internet) and go to medborgarprovet.com. Tap the menu (three dots) and select “Add to Home Screen” or “Install app”.

Confirm the installation. Medborgarprovet is now in your app drawer and on the home screen like a regular app.

The advantage is that the page opens in full screen and loads faster – and you receive notifications if we add a reminder.

13 knowledge areas from ”Sverige i fokus”

The test content is based on UHR's official educational material, ”Sverige i fokus” (Sweden in Focus). This material is open, free of charge, and divided into 13 clear knowledge areas. These broadly cover society – from the rules of democracy to everyday issues of welfare, work, and traditions. These are the same areas upon which the questions in the actual test are based, making them your most important checklist.

The 13 areas are: The Country of Sweden, Modern Swedish History, How Sweden is Governed, Sweden's Democratic System, Political Elections and Parties, Law and Justice, Human Rights, The Role of Media, Secular State and Multi-Religious Country, Sweden and the World, The Welfare Society, Labour Market and Personal Finance, and Traditions and Holidays. Each area contains both fact-based questions and questions that test your understanding of how society is interconnected.

At Medborgarprovet.com, we have built a dedicated module for each of these 13 areas. You can choose to first scan which area you are weakest in and then practice specifically, or take a complete practice test with mixed questions from all areas – just like in the actual test.

A good guideline is to allocate at least a few hours per knowledge area, with extra focus on Law and Justice, How Sweden is Governed, and The Welfare Society. These areas are usually perceived as the most comprehensive as they contain many institutions, concepts, and dates.

Effective mobile training

Your mobile is perfect for short training sessions. Take 5–10 minutes on the bus, in the queue at the grocery store, or during a coffee break – do 10 practice questions and put it away.

In 3 weeks, that amounts to over 200 questions just from “break training” – which is a significant portion of the basic knowledge.

Complete 60-question tests are more comfortable on a tablet or computer, but also work on mobile if you can set aside 90 minutes uninterrupted.
