Who Needs to Take the Test?

Most adults applying for Swedish citizenship from June 6, 2026, onwards must demonstrate knowledge of Swedish society. Certain exceptions exist, for example, for those who have completed sfi course D (Swedish for Immigrants, level D) or have other approved education. Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency) decides on a case-by-case basis.

According to Migrationsverket, new rules for Swedish citizenship apply from June 6, 2026. Part of the requirement is to demonstrate knowledge of Swedish society – often in the form of a citizenship test administered by UHR.
