Swedish Citizenship Test in Halmstad β How to Prepare for 2026
If you live in Halmstad municipality and plan to apply for Swedish citizenship, according to the new regulations from 6 June 2026, you will need to demonstrate knowledge of Swedish society. Here, we explain what this means for you in Halmstad and how you can prepare independently.
The Test for Residents of Halmstad
The citizenship test is a national examination β the content, number of questions, and assessment are the same regardless of whether you live in Halmstad or any other Swedish municipality. Halmstad is located in Halland County and has approximately 105,000 inhabitants.
The test is developed by UHR (Universitets- och hΓΆgskolerΓ₯det, the Swedish Council for Higher Education). Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency) will assign you to a test session via an assignment letter once you have submitted your citizenship application.
According to UHR, the citizenship test is a multiple-choice exam with approximately 60 questions to be answered in 90 minutes. Each question has four answer options with one correct answer. The test is taken in Swedish and on paper. The first test session is scheduled for 15 August 2026 in Stockholm.

Currently, UHR has announced that the first test session is scheduled for 15 August 2026 in Stockholm. More test locations are expected to be added over time. Residents of Halmstad should therefore plan for potential travel to the nearest test location.

Who Needs to Take the Test?
Most adults applying for Swedish citizenship from 6 June 2026 onwards will need to demonstrate knowledge of Swedish society. Some exceptions apply, for example, if you have completed sfi (Swedish for Immigrants) course D or have other approved education. Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency) decides on a case-by-case basis.
