The test for those living in Luleå

The citizenship test is a national test – the content, number of questions, and assessment are the same regardless of whether you live in Luleå or any other Swedish municipality. Luleå is located in Norrbotten County and has approximately 80,000 inhabitants.

The test is developed by UHR (Universitets- och högskolerådet, the Swedish Council for Higher Education). Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency) will assign you a test date via an assignment letter once you have submitted your citizenship application.

According to UHR, the citizenship test is a multiple-choice exam with approximately 60 questions to be answered in 90 minutes. Each question has four answer options with one correct answer. The test is written in Swedish and on paper. The first test date is scheduled for 15 August 2026 in Stockholm.

Who needs to take the test?

Most adults applying for Swedish citizenship from 6 June 2026 onwards must demonstrate knowledge of Swedish society. Some exceptions apply, for example, for those who have completed sfi (Swedish for Immigrants) course D or have other approved education. Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency) decides on a case-by-case basis.

According to Migrationsverket, new rules for Swedish citizenship apply from 6 June 2026. Part of the requirement is to demonstrate knowledge of Swedish society – often in the form of a citizenship test administered by UHR.
