How the Citizenship Test Works in Practice

The citizenship test is a national knowledge test about Swedish society, developed by the Universitets- och högskolerådet (UHR – the Swedish Council for Higher Education) on behalf of the government. The test is part of the new regulations for Swedish citizenship that come into force on June 6, 2026. The first test opportunity is scheduled for August 15, 2026, in Stockholm, and more locations will open gradually.

According to UHR, the test consists of approximately 60 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 90 minutes. Each question has four answer options, with exactly one being correct. The test is taken in Swedish and on paper in a supervised room. You may not bring a mobile phone, dictionary, or notes. Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency) is the authority that processes your application for citizenship. When your application is complete, you will receive an assignment letter stating when and where you should take the test. You cannot, therefore, freely choose the time or location yourself – the assignment comes from Migrationsverket in collaboration with UHR's test system.

After the test, you will be notified whether you have passed or not. If you fail, the proposal states that you can retake the test at the next regular opportunity. A failed test does not mean your application for citizenship is immediately rejected – Migrationsverket always makes an overall assessment that also includes residency requirements, good conduct, and maintenance requirements.

The Assignment Letter from Migrationsverket

Once you have submitted your application for citizenship and it is complete, you will receive an assignment letter from Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency). The letter will inform you that you need to take the citizenship test and how to do so.

The letter is usually sent both digitally (to 'Mina sidor' – My Pages) and by post. Read the letter carefully – it will outline the steps you need to take, the timeframe within which you must confirm, and the location and time interval that applies to you.

The content of the test is based on UHR's (the Swedish Council for Higher Education) official educational material “Sverige i fokus” (Sweden in Focus). The material is open, free of charge, and divided into 13 clear knowledge areas. These broadly cover society – from the rules of democracy to everyday issues of welfare, work, and traditions. How to Register in Practice

Step 3: Choose the test date and location that best suits you from the available options. Step 4: Confirm your booking – you will receive a confirmation via email.

Have a valid ID ready (Swedish driving license, passport, or national ID card from EU/EES). Without a valid ID, you will not be allowed to take the test.

Checklist Before Test Day
