The Test for Residents of Umeå

The citizenship test is a national examination – the content, number of questions, and assessment are the same regardless of whether you live in Umeå or any other Swedish municipality. Umeå is located in Västerbotten County and has approximately 135,000 inhabitants.

The test is developed by UHR (Universitets- och högskolerådet – the Swedish Council for Higher Education). Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency) will assign you a test date via an invitation letter once you have submitted your citizenship application.

According to UHR, the citizenship test is a multiple-choice exam with approximately 60 questions to be answered in 90 minutes. Each question has four answer options, with one correct answer. The test is taken in Swedish and on paper. The first test date is scheduled for 15 August 2026 in Stockholm.

Who Needs to Take the Test?

Most adults applying for Swedish citizenship from 6 June 2026 onwards will need to demonstrate knowledge of Swedish society. Some exceptions apply, for example, if you have completed sfi (Swedish for Immigrants) course D or have other approved education. Migrationsverket will make a decision in each individual case.

According to Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency), new rules for Swedish citizenship apply from 6 June 2026. Part of the requirement is to demonstrate knowledge of Swedish society – often in the form of a citizenship test administered by UHR.
