The Test for Residents of Västerås

The citizenship test is a national examination – its content, number of questions, and assessment criteria are the same whether you live in Västerås or any other Swedish municipality. Västerås is located in Västmanland County and has approximately 160,000 inhabitants.

The test is developed by UHR (Universitets- och högskolerådet), the Swedish Council for Higher Education. Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency) will direct you to a test session via an allocation letter once you have submitted your citizenship application.

According to UHR, the citizenship test is a multiple-choice exam with approximately 60 questions to be answered within 90 minutes. Each question has four answer options, with one correct answer. The test is written in Swedish and on paper. The first test session is scheduled for August 15, 2026, in Stockholm.

Who Needs to Take the Test?

Most adults applying for Swedish citizenship from June 6, 2026, onwards will need to demonstrate knowledge of Swedish society. Some exceptions apply, for example, if you have completed sfi (Swedish for Immigrants) course D or have other approved education. Migrationsverket will make a decision in each individual case.

According to Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency), new rules for Swedish citizenship apply from June 6, 2026. Part of this requirement is to demonstrate knowledge of Swedish society – often in the form of a citizenship test administered by UHR.
