New Rules for Swedish Citizenship 2026
New rules for Swedish citizenship will come into force on 6 June 2026, according to Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency). This includes requirements for knowledge of Swedish society and the Swedish language. Here, we explain what is changing, who will be affected, and how you can prepare.
What do the new rules entail?
The new rules aim to raise the requirements for becoming a Swedish citizen. In addition to residency and a well-behaved lifestyle, knowledge of Swedish society will be required, and eventually, Swedish language proficiency.
The rules apply to adult applicants. There are some exceptions, for example, for those who have completed sfi (Swedish for Immigrants) course D or similar.
When will the rules come into effect?
According to Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency), the new rules will apply from 6 June 2026. UHR (the Swedish Council for Higher Education) states that the first test date is planned for 15 August 2026 in Stockholm. More dates and locations are expected to be added.
Who is responsible for what?
Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency) assesses your citizenship application and refers you to the test via a referral letter. UHR (the Swedish Council for Higher Education) is responsible for developing and conducting the citizenship test itself. The government has assigned them this task.
