Citizenship Test
The 'medborgarskapsprov' (citizenship test) is the name of the knowledge test about Swedish society being introduced as part of Sweden's new rules for Swedish citizenship from June 6, 2026.
Citizenship Test
Medborgarskapstest is sometimes used as an everyday term for the official Swedish citizenship test. It refers to the same thing – a knowledge test about Swedish society.
Civic Studies
Civic studies is the subject that deals with how society works – politics, economics, law and justice, media, and welfare. It is civic studies that forms the basis of the citizenship test.
UHR
UHR stands for Universitets- och högskolerådet (The Swedish Council for Higher Education). It is the government agency responsible for developing and conducting the Swedish citizenship test.
Migrationsverket
Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency) is the government authority that processes applications for residence permits, asylum, and Swedish citizenship.
Referral letter
A referral letter (anvisningsbrev) is sent by Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency) when you need to take the citizenship test as part of your citizenship application.
Domicile
Domicile means you have lived in Sweden for a certain continuous period. It is one of the requirements to obtain Swedish citizenship.
Self-Sufficiency Requirement
The self-sufficiency requirement means you must be able to support yourself through legal means to meet the requirements for Swedish citizenship.
SFI
SFI stands for Swedish for Immigrants. It is a basic Swedish language education for adults who do not have Swedish as their mother tongue.
Sverige i fokus
Sverige i fokus (Sweden in focus) is UHR's official study material for the Swedish citizenship test. It is free to use and can be downloaded from UHR's website.
Knowledge Requirements
Knowledge requirements mean that you, as an applicant for Swedish citizenship, must demonstrate basic knowledge of Swedish society.
Trial test
A trial test is a test session conducted to test questions before an official exam. The results are not counted as a regular exam.
